Kathmandu Launches Drive to Clear Riverbank Squatter Settlements

The Nepali government on Saturday launched a large-scale eviction drive to clear squatter settlements along riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley, beginning with Thapathali along the Bagmati River and extending to Gairigaun, Sinamangal, and Lokanthali near the Manohara River. A joint team of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Kathmandu Metropolitan Police deployed bulldozers and security personnel, while displaced families were screened at Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwor and some relocated to Kirtipur and Nagarjun. A writ was filed at the Supreme Court challenging the evictions, and CPN-UML raised human rights concerns, while squatter groups protested at the Rastriya Swatantra Party office seeking intervention.
